Our engineering tool Unified-E App Designer is free for developers and can be downloaded here:
The creation and testing of HMI operator apps with the Unified-E App Designer are free of charge. Costs are incurred only for runtime licenses needed to enable operation on the end devices. For development and testing purposes, operator apps can be tested on operator devices with full functionality even without a license.
Unified-E supports two main license types to meet different project requirements. Depending on the desired communication type, a Direct or a Gateway license should be chosen. Details can be found under Communication Types.
The purchased license must be activated in the Unified-E App Client on an operator device and should be chosen if the operator device is to communicate directly with the endpoints. Direct communication is used here, which is described under Communication Types.
You can register and use the operator app created in the Unified-E App Designer on an operator device for direct communication at any time. It is then usable on the operator device for 24 hours from the time of registration. The use of an operator app without a license is only permitted during development, for testing purposes, or for demonstrations.

The license must be activated on an operator device (e.g., Windows computer, Android HMI panel, or iPhone) using the Unified-E App Client and is intended for operator apps with direct communication to endpoints. For activation, the license is bound to the respective operator device, which requires an internet connection. After activation, any number of operator apps can be added or updated on the device without needing an internet connection. The number of endpoints or data points used within an app is unlimited, only restricted by the hardware capacity. The use of the Unified-E App Designer engineering tool is included, so no additional costs are incurred for creating or running operator apps on the activated device.
A one-time license transfer to another operator device is possible within the first 5 years after purchase to avoid unnecessary costs in the event of early device failure. Software updates and new features of the Unified-E App Designer and Unified-E App Client are included throughout the lifetime of the activated device.
The Gateway license is tied to a gateway PC and should be chosen if the communication between the operator device and endpoints is to run through a gateway PC. The gateway communication used here is described in more detail under Communication Types. There are Basic, Standard, and Pro licenses, which differ in the types of communication supported between the operator device and the gateway PC. The Gateway license is activated in the Unified-E App Manager on the gateway PC.
The standard test license of the Unified-App Manager is free, unlimited in time, and only requires online registration. The test license is expressly intended only for testing or demonstration purposes and may not be used commercially, e.g., to operate a machine or plant permanently. You can register for free here. You can find the Unified-E App Manager in the download area.
The Pro test license of the Unified-App Manager can be tested for free for 30 days. The test license is offered when the Unified-E App Manager is started for the first time. The test license is only intended for testing or demonstration purposes and may not be used commercially, e.g., to operate a machine or plant permanently. You can find the Unified-App Manager in the download area.

* Firewall-friendly
Firewall-friendly means that communication is done via a messaging service, so no port forwarding to the gateway PC (Unified-E App Manager) needs to be configured. A fixed IP address is not required.
The Basic license must be activated on a gateway PC using the Unified-E App Manager and is optimized for operating plants with multiple operator devices, provided the operator devices and the gateway PC are in the same network. The license is bound to the gateway PC during activation, which requires an internet connection. After activation, no internet connection is needed for ongoing operation, and any number of operator apps can be added or updated. The number of endpoints or datapoints used within an operator app is unlimited, only restricted by the hardware capacity. The use of the Unified-E App Designer engineering tool is included, so no additional costs are incurred for creating or running operator apps on the number of operator devices specified in the license. Operator devices can be removed or added in the App Manager as needed, provided the total number of registered operator devices does not exceed the maximum specified in the license.
A one-time transfer of the license to another gateway PC is possible within the first five years after purchase to avoid unnecessary costs in case of early device failure. Software updates and new features of the Unified-E App Manager, Unified-E App Designer, and Unified-E App Client are included throughout the lifetime of the activated device.
The Standard license is used to log in to a gateway PC with the Unified-E App Manager and is optimized for plants with multiple operator devices that allow for mobile operation or monitoring via the Internet. It is a subscription model with annual billing; the operation of the App Manager is only possible with an active subscription. The subscription includes the use of the Unified-E App Client, Unified-E App Manager, and Unified-E App Designer programs. Additionally, online services for sending push notifications, easy registration of operator apps via the Internet, and regular software updates are included. An internet connection is required, as regular license checks are conducted online.
In the App Manager, operator devices can be removed or added as needed, provided the total number of registered operator devices does not exceed the maximum specified in the license.
The Pro license is an enhanced version of the Standard license. It additionally supports the "Firewall-friendly" communication type, which allows internet communication between the operator device and the App Manager without the need for firewall or router configurations. This is accomplished using a messaging service (Relay Bus) from Microsoft Azure.
